Perry was born in Chicago to two actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. Her first TV roles included two roles on the show as Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) in her role on the ABC sitcom Roseanne, the character portrayed by her mother. However, her parents were not keen to let her take on acting roles until she was an adult, fearing the effects of stress. Perry said that she was nervous to be an actor during high school, but started doing shows in the theater at Northwestern University as a way to make friends after transferring to the university from Boston University. Perry was a graduate of Boston University, relocated into New York in search of TV roles. Perry was able to land small roles on shows such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. But, her home-sickness drove her to California for theater roles. Her mother and she appeared on Broadway together for the play The Other Place, in 2013. In the year 2015, she was with Kevin McKidd alongside her mother in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prizewinning Drama Anna Christie. The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble is located in West Los Angeles. Perry played a role in 9 episodes of the ABC crime thriller The Family in 2016. In 2017, Perry had the role of a political thriller Scandal alongside her father. The same year she was cast as a young version of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again playing a young model of the mother's. The character was chosen through an audition, even having a strong association with it.
